5. Wellbeing: At I Am Me, we teach children key skills to improve their social and emotional well-being

Anxiety and depression is affecting more children every year. 1 in 6 Children aged 5 – 16 are experiencing difficulties with their mental health.

Low self-esteem and lack of confidence can affect how children view themselves and their abilities. This often has a negative impact on their work, studies, relationships, and health. Low self-esteem and a lack of confidence has been proven to have associations with mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression.

Children with high levels of self-esteem go on to form better friendships and relationships and have more successful careers. They can overcome mistakes and challenges; problem solve and have a greater level of independence.

Children need to be taught these fundamental skills to deal with the anxieties and stresses of daily life and be the best versions of themselves. At I Am Me, we prioritise children’s mental health and our aim is to equip children with the skills to improve their mental health and lives while having fun!

WHAT WE DO

WHAT WE DO

At I Am Me, children engage in a range of fun activities, games and challenges that focus on our key skills.

We begin each day by completing our morning journals. These are guided sessions where we identify our strengths, reflect and take a moment to express our gratitude.  We then complete a morning yoga session. These sessions include independent activities, partner work and group work.

Each day children complete an Art-Based activity focusing on one or more of the I Am Me key skills. We also do some carousel activities focusing on our key skills. During this, children are in groups of approximately 8 children of a similar age range. This is a perfect opportunity for our I Am Me staff to focus on particular skills we’ve noticed particular children struggling with. For example making friends, being confident and persevering.

Before the end of the session, we have an opportunity to reflect, share are work from the day and complete some activities as a whole group. Throughout the day, we also complete some meditations and mindfulness activities.

Throughout the week at I Am Me, children will have time to discover what makes them unique and special. They are encouraged to be proud of themselves, their differences and the achievements they make throughout each day.

At I Am Me, we want children to feel safe and confident. We focus on building relationships of trust so we never force a child to share / present.  Instead. we work closely with them to equip them with the skills and confidence to take that step when they are ready.

ABOUT US

ABOUT US

I am a 26-year old primary school teacher who has just completed my 5th year of teaching. Throughout my 5 years of teaching, I made it a priority to build a culture that supported children to feel safe, supported and loved.

I approach teaching with a culture of kindness and positivity and focus on each child as a unique individual. I celebrate and praise each child’s achievements and encourage them to be their unique selves. This has enabled them to feel confident sharing, making mistakes and led to them developing higher levels of confidence and self-esteem.

I am a qualified mental health first aider and have completed recent training in Emotional Coaching for Children.

Practicing daily gratitude and positive thinking is something I do daily. This has helped me to overcome challenges throughout my life. Such as being diagnosed with a chronic illness 5 years ago.

I am so passionate in improving mental health amongst young children and supporting them to overcome big or small challenges they may be faced with in life.
